Stonewall National Monument 10th Anniversary walking map of 27 storefront locations in Greenwich Village.

Join the West Village BID and Christopher Park Alliance as we mark the 10th anniversary of Stonewall National Monument. A curated historical exhibition in partnership with 27 neighborhood businesses.

JUNE 20 – JULY 2, 2026 · SELF-GUIDED WALK

The Anniversary

Walk the streets where a movement was born.

On June 24, 2016, the Stonewall National Monument was created as the first national monument dedicated to LGBTQ+ history and civil rights. Ten years later, we mark the anniversary and the unfinished work.

Storefronts across the West Village will feature vivid educational panels that trace the course of LGBTQ+ civil rights: life before Stonewall, the raid on the Stonewall Inn in June of 1969, and the civil rights movement fueled by the uprising. Together, 27 storefront windows form a distributed exhibition, walkable in one visit or in return trips.

Each stop is another chapter.

History

Christopher Park, Stonewall Inn, and the streets around them.

The monument covers Christopher Park, the Stonewall Inn, and the surrounding streets where the Stonewall Uprising began on the night of June 28, 1969. After years of police raids and harassment targeting LGBTQ+ New Yorkers, patrons and neighbors fought back. Six nights of protest followed and helped ignite a movement that reshaped law and civic life across the country and the world.

"I'm designating the Stonewall National Monument as the newest addition to America's National Park System. Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story of the struggle for LGBT rights. I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country, the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us. That we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one."

President Barack Obama, June 24, 2016
